BIG DAY IN #15: Lady D and The Shadow Spirits
COUNTDOWN TO BIG DAY IN:
Big Day In, Ithaca Underground’s biggest show of the year, is on Saturday, December 7! The event is a twelve-hour festival (12PM – 12AM), filled to the brim with touring and local artists. To celebrate the countdown to the Big Day, there will be an artist profile for each performing artist. Today, we have Lady D and The Shadow Spirits!
ARTIST PROFILE: LADY D AND THE SHADOW SPIRITS
“Shadows from my past / Like autumn fodder yields / Buried to the ground / All in time will heal.” -She Blooms on Starkiss
Lady D and The Shadow Spirits creates healing spaces with their powerfully belted vocals and reverberant guitar. They are able to reach down into the depths and unearth what’s inside through soulful rock, folk, and punk vibrations. Their lyricism expresses these feelings deeply, which makes them immediately felt. Able to be both expansive and intimate in the spaces they inhabit, they are able to capture something that can only be described as magic.
Starkiss is Lady D and The Shadow Spirits’ latest release. On it, the bassy tone of their guitar fills the space and reverberates into the room. They ask the listener to reach down within themselves and sit with any pain they’ve buried there. It’s not always an easy process, but the music creates a space that makes it comfortable and safe to feel what you’ve been hiding from.
My favorite track on the album is “She Blooms.” Its pre-chorus feels like rushing water and cleansing me of any stress that I’ve accumulated. When performed live, the “She Blooms” chorus is a section that the audience is asked to sing along to. Any opportunity that I am encouraged to sing along with the artist on stage is a magical one.
