BIG DAY IN #15: Home Body

BIG DAY IN #15

COUNTDOWN TO BIG DAY IN:

10 DAYS LEFT

Big Day In, Ithaca Underground’s biggest show of the year, is on Saturday, December 7! The event is a twelve-hour festival (12PM – 12AM), filled to the brim with touring and local artists. To celebrate the countdown to the Big Day, there will be an artist profile for each performing artist. Today, we have synth-pop duo, Home Body!

ARTIST PROFILE: HOME BODY

“Go ahead take your time / In between / Every day is the night / Oh, am I nothing without my blood?”-DNA on Spiritus

Home Body is the fever-pop, synthesized duo of Eric Hnatow and Haley Morgan. Weaved through the wires of synthesizers and mic cables are the sounds of electronic, new wave, and experimental pop music, performed from the gut with wild abandon and art-school-cool theatricality. Their sonic landscape feels like the inner workings of the body: synapses of energy running through nerve endings like the inner workings of the synthesizers, with the warm-blooded pulsing of vocals that fill in the space and are reminiscent of soft human bodies. Live, the duo punctuates their sound with dance and DIY manual light manipulation, reaching beyond their performance to create a high-vibration spectacle that is buzzing with soul, shadow, and depth.

The duo have released five projects since they began making music in 2011. Their most recent project, Spiritus, meditates on the constantly transforming and changing human experience. It is self-produced and filled with sprawling synths, ghostly vocals, and the soft thumping of a heartbeat-like drum machine. It shifts from feeling ethereal like the flowing bloodstream to the grittiness of nerve endings in our bodies. “DNA” is my favorite because its lyrics make me think about the circulatory system in my body. How do I feel in my body? Am I nothing without my blood? Check out the music video for “DNA” here!

You can find Home Body on their Facebook under the handle @helloHOMEBODY
